V7ndotcom Elursrebmem Contest status

I'd wrongly suggested that the number one V7ndotcom contest site was probably by Dave Naylor but it looks likes it's by a "not so famous" SEO dude named Dan Freakley over in the UK.

I'd just like to say "Brilliant, Dan, Brilliant"

His effort reminds me of my talk with the winner of the Nigritude Ultramarine contest last year. Anil Dash. Anil said he just did it as a lark, wondering if his blog prominence would give him a high rank. It did and he won.

The moral of these stories, and my own experiences watching failed attempts by expensive SEO "experts", is that few sites need professional SEO optimization. I'd guess more would be hurt than helped by it. There are a handful of really good SEO folks out there but if you know them you are already so well informed you can probabably do the SEO yourself with advice from the top folks who tend to hang at the big internet conferences and share great information for the cost of a few beers.

Welcome to The Grand V7ndotcom Elursrebmem Hotel

The V7ndotcomTest continues with a new NUMBER TWO. Remaining at number one is the super cleaver Hotel site which features the actual URL and, I think, is run by Dave Naylor's group. DaveN is *easily* among the handful of super elite SEO guys, and I'm sure he'd agree he may be the best in the world, running his SEO empire from an ISP he owns over in Leeds, England. Fine fellow in person, though he's known to be a bit ... aggressive ... in pursuit of the perfect ranking for his clients.

The top FIVE from Google about noon on Feb 28.

v7ndotcom elursrebmem interest is waning

Based on technorati's graph of the use of the term v7ndotcom elursrebmem interest in the contest is, understandably, waning. Also interesting is that this term, easily one of the most referenced "new" word combinations online, is NOT suggested by the Google suggestion feature in the toolbar. CF NEWER proper noun combos like American Idol contestants. This may mean that Google has altered the way the algorithm treats "v7ndotcom elursrebmem"or it could simply be that they block some terms (as they do with porn related terms in the suggestion box).

Scoble checked in on the contest by linking to one guy who was then disparaged by other contest people. I wish he or another A lister would blog a lot about it to see if blogs remain a potentially very important source for linking. Anil Dash won the nigritude ultramarine in that fashion. I complimented him about it at MashupCamp and he said it was actually annoying because - I think this was it - he got so many junky and annoying mails following the "win".

v7ndotcom elursrebmem tag at technorati

I'm wondering if Jim's success in the V7ndotcom contest is more related to his Digg dominance than other approaches. Challenging the whole contest is the fact that Google is likely to adjust things manually to prevent this from revealing too much about the algo. Good question for Matt, who sure must be busy these days declaring things about the algorithm for the upcoming case USA vs Google.

Here's a test of technorati tag for the term. v7ndotcom elursrebmem As many people as are in this contest it's becoming clear to me that there are probably only a few hundred SEOs who are really up on the news and changes enough to have a good shot (I'm NOT one of them and don't consider myself an SEO). That said Anil Dash proved that you don't need to be an SEO to rank very highly when he won the last big SEO contest.

Jim Westergren is back in the lead in the V7ndotcom test contest and he's admirably shared what many whould consider a white hat SEO strategy below. I'm not sure if Google would agree or not about this being white hat, and I'm anxious to ask Matt Cutts about all this the next time I see him. I've been concerned for some time that Google's ferocious defense of the algo may lead them to consider many normal forms of linkage like paid links and link trades "link manipulation" and downrank the sites.

Here's his strategy from his blog (yes, I think he's being totally honest about this but you can never know for sure.

  • Take my domain that ranks best with Google (domain age, TrustRank, PageRank) and before the start of contest increase the link popularity gradually by placing permanent links using my link building team. Done
  • Prepare the blog post with a valuable resource of the contest as a link bait and make it all ready so I just have to replace the KWs.Done
  • Right after KW announcement, blog the post and submit to digg.com. Done
  • Put an internal link in the footer so that PR from all posts flows to this page. Done
  • Get enough diggs to get on the front page and ignite the big increase of natural backlinks.
Failure, non-SEO diggers reported the submission even though I got 56 diggs.
  • Follow up the increase of backlinks by simulating a natural gradual increase using:

    elursrebmem

v7ndotcom elursrebmem is the term that will define SEO for at least the 15 minutes of fame it will confer on the winner of the V7 contest. Unfortunately, the Alien Connection makes the contest a dangerous and ill fated application of technology best left to those from other worlds.

    v7ndotcom

The v7ndotcom contest is probably the biggest SEO event of the century, and the best bet is currently on ... no surprise here .... the URL with the name "v7ndotcom elursrebmem"

Today I met the winner of the last contest, the illustrious Anil Dash who is here at MashupCamp in Mountain View. He won the "nigritude ultramarine" SEO event by asking a bunch of his blogging compatriots to link to him. Not clear if that would still work, but in any case he said he's not playing this time!

    v7ndotcom elursrebmem, Alien Astronaut

v7ndotcom elursrebmemThe v7ndotcom elursrebmem contest is an elaborate and expensive hoax to hide the public from the terrible truth. v7ndotcom elursrebmem, or "VE" as his alien friends affectionately called him, was an Alien Astronaut from a distant planet and one of the Aliens involved in the Roswell, NM galactic traffic accident incident.
